Alootook Ipellie[1] (1. januar 1951–8. september 2007)[2] var ein inuittisk grafisk kunstnar, politisk og satirisk vitseteiknar, forfattar, fotograf og inuktitut-omsetjar.[2]

Bakgrunn[endre | endre wikiteksten]

Ipellie var fødd i den vesle jaktleiren Nuvuqquq[3] i nærleiken av Frobisher Bay, no kjend som Iqaluit, på Baffinøya. Staden tilhøyrde då Nordvestterritoria og er no del av Nunavut. Far hans, Joanassie, døydde i ei jaktulukke før Ipellie var blitt eitt år gammal,[4] og mor hans, Napatchie, flytta med han til bygda Frobisher Bay.[5] Bestefar hans var bilethoggaren Ennutsiak.[6]

Der var ingen high school i nærleiken av staden han budde, så han måtte flytta for å fullføra utdanninga si. Ipellie enda opp ved High School of Commerce i Ottawa, der han oppdaga dei kunstnariske evnene sine. Han slo seg til slutt ned i Ottawa.

Ipellie verka som journalist, stripeteiknar og redaktør for Inuit Monthly ( også kjent som Inuit Today) på 1970- og 1980-talet.[7] I 1974 byrja han å laga seriestripa Ice Box,[4] som blei ein fast serie i Inuit Monthly.

Han skapte så seriestripa Nuna and Vut på 1990-talet.[8] Denne teikneserien tok for seg inuittliv under skapinga av territoriet Nunavut. Med humor og illustrasjonar kommenterte han samfunnstilhøve og ulikskapar i inuittsamfunn.

Poesi og prosa[endre | endre wikiteksten]

I 1971 gav Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND) ut tre illustrerte dikt av den då 17 år gamle Ipellie i tidsskriftet North.[9]:34-7[10]

"The mosquitos are at large today
As the wind stills, as the sun heats,
And we walk the rocks under,
Searching the hills for the meat
And hide of the useful caribou
that feeds and clothes my family,
Through four different seasons
When the winds change from
Hot to warm, and cool to cold."

Andre dikt av han er blitt gjevne ut i diktantologiar og tidsskrift, som «Nipikti the Old Man Carver», «Frobisher Bay Childhood», «Damn Those Invaders» og «Siqiniq 'The Sun'».[11]:355

I 1993 blei den fyrste boka som berre inneheldt Ipellie sine soger og teikningar ut – Arctic Dreams and Nightmares.[12]

I 2005 skreiv Ipellie forordet til den illustrerte boka The Diary of Abraham Ulrikab: Text and Context. Boka fortalde soga om Ulrikab (1845–1881), som blei ein menneskeleg attraksjon i ei av Carl Hagenbeck sine etnografiske framsyning i Hamburg i Tyskland. Boka blei gjeven ut på tysk i 2007.

I 2007 gav han ut den illustrerte boka The Inuit Thought of It: Amazing Arctic Innovations, omsett til fransk som Innovations inuites: il fallait y penser, som var skrive i lage med David MacDonald. Boka vann fleire prisar, mellom anna Canadian Children’s Book Centre sin pris Best Books for Kids & Teens in 2008.[13]

Han skreiv også stoff om Nunavut for Inuit.net saman med Carol Rigby.[14]

Den illustrerte boka I Shall Wait and Wait kom ut i 2009, etter at Ipellie døydde, skildra tradisjonell inuittisk selfangst.[15]

Kunst av Ipellie finst i fleire samlingar og galleri, mellom anna Carleton University Art Gallery,[16] Canada Council Art Bank i Ottawa[17] og Richard F. Brush Art Gallery ved St. Lawrence University i New York.[18][19]

I 2019 blei Ipellie teken inn i Canadian Cartoonists Hall of Fame.[20]

Ipellie døydde av hjarteinfarkt i Ottawa i Ontario då han var 56.[2] Han etterlet seg ei dotter, Taina Ipellie.
