Ciaran Gerard Carson (9. oktober 1948–6. oktober 2019) var ein nordirsk diktar og romanforfattar.
Bakgrunn og utdanning
[endre | endre wikiteksten]Ciaran Carson blei fødd i Belfast i 1948 i ein irsktalande familie.[1] Far hans, William, var postmann og mor hans, Mary, arbeidde i linindustrien. Dei fyrste åra sine budde han i nedre Falls Road, der han gjekk på Slate Street School og deretter St. Gall's Primary School. Han gjekk så på St. Mary's Christian Brothers' Grammar School før han blei student i engelsk ved Queen's University, Belfast (QUB).[2]
Karriere
[endre | endre wikiteksten]Etter fullført grad arbeidde han i over tjue år som Traditional Arts Officer ved Arts Council of Northern Ireland.[3]
I 1998 blei han utnemnd til professor i engelsk ved Queen's University, Belfast, der han grunnla og var direktør for Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry.[3]
Han gjekk av med pensjon i 2016, men blei verande tilknytt organisasjonen på deltidsbasis.[4]
Virke
[endre | endre wikiteksten]Diktsamlingane hans inkluderer The Irish for No (1987), som vann Alice Hunt Bartlett-prisen; Belfast Confetti (1990), som vann Irish Times Irish Literature Prize for Poetry, og First Language: Poems (1993), som vann T. S. Eliot-prisen. Breaking News frå 2003 vann Forward Poetry Prize (Beste diktsamlinga det året) og Cholmondeley-prisen.[3] Prosaverka hans inkluderer The Star Factory (1997) og Fishing for Amber (1999). Romanen hans Shamrock Tea (2001) tek for seg tema i Jan van Eyck sitt måleri Arnolfini-bryllaupet. Han omsette Inferno av Dante og gav det ut i november 2002. Han omsette The Midnight Court av Brian Merriman i 2006. For All We Know kom ut i 2008, og hans Collected Poems blei gjeven ut på Irland i 2008, og i Nord-Amerika i 2009.[5]
Carson var òg ein dyktig musiker, og han var skreiv Last Night's Fun: About Time, Food and Music (1996), ein studie av irsk tradisjonsmusikk.[3] Han skreiv ein spalte om irsk folkemusikk for The Journal of Music annankvar månad. I 2007 blei omsetjinga hans av det gammalirske eposet Táin Bó Cúailnge, kalla The Táin, gjeven ut av Penguin Classics.[6]
To månader før han døydde gav han ut Claude Monet, "The Artist's Garden at Vétheuil", 1880 i The New Yorker. Dei siste linjene var:[7]
- It’s beautiful weather, the 30th of March, and tomorrow the clocks go forward.
- How strange it is to be lying here listening to whatever it is going on.
- The days are getting longer now, however many of them I have left.
- And the pencil I am writing this with, old as it is, will easily outlast their end.
Carson døydde av lungekreft den 6. oktober 2019, 70 år gammal.[8][9]
I 2020 skipa Seamus Heaney Centre to årlege stipend (fellowship) til minne om Ciaran Carson, den fyrste direktøren sin, og inspirert av skrivinga hans om byen Belfast i prosa og poesi.[10]
