Darlene Love, fødd Darlene Wright (fødd 26. juli 1941)[1] er ein amerikansk songar av populærmusikk som særleg var verksam på 1960-talet.

Love blei lansert av Phil Spector og var medlem av gruppene The Blossoms og The Crystals. Blant dei best kjende songane hennar er «He's a Rebel», «He's Sure the Boy I Love» og «Today I Met the Boy I'm Gonna Marry». Darlene Love var kanskje den viktigaste artisten til Phil Spector då ho song med som hovudsongar eller i koret i fleire av gruppene han lanserte. Love var òg med i Blue Jeans som saman med Bob Soxx gjorde dei siste opptaka sine hos Phil Spector på julalbumet A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector frå 1963 der dei framfører «The Bells of St Mary's» og «Here Comes Santa Claus». Darlene Love gjorde òg eigne opptak som hovudartist.

Love har òg verka som skodespelar, og spelte Trish Murtaugh i Dødelig våpen-filmane.

Love var fødd som Darlene Wright i Los Angeles i 1941. Foreldra var Ellen Maddox og presten Joe Wright.[2][3] Ho hadde fire sysken, og systera Edna voks opp til å bli hovudvokalisten i gruppa Honey Cone.[4]

Familien budde ei tid i San Antonio i Texas, der faren fekk ansvaret for si eiga kyrkje. Her byrja Darlene å synga i klubbar på skulen. Då famiien flytta tilbake til California i 1956 blei ho med i kyrkjekoret.[5] Medan ho framleis gjekk på high school, i 1957, song ho med doo-wop-gruppa Echoes.[6] Ho blei så beden med i jentegruppa The Blossoms.[7]

The Blossoms hadde suksess som bakgrunnssongarar, og Love song med musikarar som Sam Cooke, Dionne Warwick, Bill Medley, The Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones og Sonny and Cher. Gruppa opptredde mellom anna på hittar som «Be My Baby» av The Ronettes, «Johnny Angel» av Shelley Fabares, «Monster Mash» av Bobby «Boris» Pickett, Frank Sinatra-versjonen av «That's Life», «Poor Side of Town», «Baby I Need Your Loving» og «The Tracks of My Tears» av Johnny Rivers og «Da Doo Ron Ron» av The Crystals. Som soloartist song Love også bakgrunnsvokal på The Ronettes sin «Baby, I Love You». Gruppa spelte også inn eigne singlar, men hadde hatt lite suksess.

I 1962 byrja The Blossoms arbeida med produsenten Phil Spector. I november 1962 fekk Spector gruppa til å spela inn singelen «He's a Rebel» med Love som hovudvokalist. Han ville skunda seg og ha sin versjon av songen ute før den til Vicki Carr. Gruppa fekk godt betalt, men singelen blei godskriven The Crystals, ei anna gruppe Spector produserte.[8] Singelen blei den første av ei rekkje innspelingar Love gjorde for Spector i grupper med ulike namn, som Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans, som fekk ei topplisteplassering med «Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah» i 1963. Til slutt skal Love ha protestert mot namnebytta, og insistert på å opptre som seg sjølv. Spector gjekk med på det, men gav henne kunstnarnamnet Love etter ein favorittgospelsongar, Dorothy Love Coates.[8] Ho er mellom anna kreditert som soloartist på albumet A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector frå 1963

The Blossoms fekk etterkvart opptre kvar veke på Shindig! på ABC, eit av dei største musikkprogramma på amerikansk fjernsyn på den tida. Dei var også med på Elvis Presley's '68 Comeback Special på NBC.

Darlene Love og Rob Hoerburger, redaktør og skribent for New York Times, skreiv sjølvbiografien hennar My Name Is Love som kom ut i 1998.[9]

I 1995 vann Love Rhythm and Blues Foundation sin Pioneer Award.[10]

I 2011 blei Love teken inn i Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,[11] markert med ein tale halden av Bette Midler.[12][13] Midler sa: «She changed my view of the world, listening to those songs, you had to dance, you had to move, you had to keep looking for the rebel boy.» Ein gråtkjøvd Love sa i ein takketale at ho kom til å bli 70 seinare same året, og takka Spector «for recognizing my talent and making me the main voice in his Wall of Sound.» Seinare framførte ho «Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah» der Bruce Springsteen spelte ein gitarsolo.[14]

Love gav opningskonserten då Clermont Performing Arts Center i Clermont i Florida opna 26. september 2015.[15]
