Davies Gilbert PRS (fødd Davies Giddy, 6. mars 1767–24. desember 1839) var ein engelsk inginiør, forfattar og politikar. Han blei vald inn i Royal Society den 17. november 1791, og var leiar for det frå 1827 til 1830.[1][2] Han endra namnet sitt til Gilbert i 1817.[3]

Davies Giddy blei fødd 6. mars 1767 som den andre av dei tre barna til Edward Giddy, som var prest ved St Erth's church, og kona hans Catherine, som var dotter av Henry Davies frå Tredrea i St Erth i Cornwall. Den eldre broren hans, som også heitte Davies til fornamn, døydde mindre enn eit døgn etter fødselen i 1766. Det tredje barnet deira, Mary Philippa Davies Giddy (kjend som Philippa), blei fødd i 1769.[4] Familien Giddy flytta til Penzance, der dei budde i Chapel Street i 1775, til Catherine Giddy arva familiebustaden Tredrea i St Erth. I 1780 vende familien tilbake til St Erth, og Davies og systera fekk undervising av faren. Davies Giddy tok seinare Gilbert som etternamn. Dette var etternamnet til kona hans, agronomen Mary Ann Gilbert, som han gifta seg med i påska 1808.[2]

Davies var elev ved Penzance Grammar School og blei deretter undervist av far sin og av matematikaren, astronomen og presten Malachy Hitchins.[5] Då han var 17 blei han på anbefaling frå Hitchins send til Bristol for å studera ved Benjamin Donne sitt Mathematical Academy, der han var i tre år. Systera Philippa avslutta på same tid sin eigen skulegang med den kjende «blåstrømpa» Hannah More.[6] Davies blei så student ved Pembroke College i Oxford i 1786. Han gjekk ut med ein MA 29. juni 1789.[2]

Davies var High Sheriff of Cornwall frå 1792 til 1793. Han var vald inn i Det britiske underhuset for Helston i Cornwall frå 1804 til 1806 og for Bodmin frå 1806 til 1832.

Giddy var ein nær venn av legen Thomas Beddoes. Han hadde vore på Beddoes sine førelesingar i Oxford då Beddoes blei University Reader in Chemistry i 1788, og hadde støtta Beddoes i planane hans for Pneumatic Institution i Bristol. Han la merke til og oppmuntra Humphry Davy i det vitskaplege arbeidet hans, og overtydde Beddoes om at Davy var den rette mannen til å arbeida ved laboratoriet på institusjonen.[7]

Ingeniørpionerar som Jonathan Hornblower, Richard Trevithick and Thomas Telford kom til han for dei matematiske evnene hans.[8] Han hadde også interesse for kornisk historie og kultur. Han flytta til dømes ein keltisk kross som stod nær Truro, ved Redruth Road der det hadde vore brukt som portstolpe, og sette det opp i ein kyrkjegard i den nye heimen sin Eastbourne.[9]

Han forska til og gav ut A Parochial History of Cornwall, og samla og gav ut ei rekkje korniske carolar.[10][11]

Han var redaktør for ei utgjeving av eit korniskspråkleg dik om pasjonsoga: Passyon agan Arluth, as Mount Calvary (1826).[12] Han blei vald inn i Society of Antiquaries i 1820.[2] Gilbert var leiar for Royal Geological Society of Cornwall frå selskapet blei grunnlagt i 1814 og til han døydde.[13] Han blei vald til utanlandsk æresmedlemg av American Academy of Arts and Sciences i 1832.[14]

Han døydde i Eastbourne i Sussex julaftan 1839.[15]

Gilbert gifta seg med Mary Ann Gilbert 18. april 1808. I 1816 tok han etternamnet hennar, Gilbert, for å føra det vidare.[16] Dette gjorde at paret kunne arva den store eigedommen til onkelen hennar Thomas Gilbert i Sussex, som ikkje hadde nokon mannleg arving.[2][17]

Gilbert hadde tre døtrer og ein son som overlevde han. Sonen deira John Davies Gilbert (5. desember 1811–16. april 1854) blei vald inn som Fellow of the Royal Society i 1834,[18] men ser ikkje ut til å ha gitt ut noko vitskapleg arbeid. Den eldste dottera, Catherine, gifta seg med John Samuel Enys (f. 1796) 17. april 1834.[19][20] Sonen hennar John Enys (1837–1912) blei ein kjend naturforskar på New Zealand.[21] Den neste dottera Annie blei gift med Henry Owen, som var prest i Heveningham i Suffolk, i 1851.[22] Dei siste døtrene deira var Mary Susannah og Hester Elizabeth.[23]
