Johnny Appleseed (26. september 1774–18. mars 1845) var ein amerikansk pioner-gartner og misjonær, fødd som John Chapman i Leominster i Massachusetts.[1] Han introduserte epletre dyrka frå frø til delstatane Ohio, Indiana og Illinois, og blei legendarisk på grunn av den venlege oppførselen og dei gode taleevnene sine.
Han er skildra i ei rekkje kunstnariske verk. Forfattaren Lydia Maria Child skreiv eit dikt om han i 1880:[2][3][4][5]
In cities, some said the old man was crazy
While others said he was only lazy;
But he took no notice of gibes and jeers,
He knew he was working for future years...
And if they inquire whence came such trees
Where not a bough once swayed in the breeze,
The answer still comes, as they travel on,
"These trees were planted by Apple-Seed John."
Låtskrivaren Vachel Lindsay gav ut dikt om Johnny Appleseed i 1921, 1923, 1927 ig 1928.[5] Eit av desse danna grunnlag for eit prisvinnande kor- og orkesterverk av Eunice Lea Kettering, Johnny Appleseed.[6]
I 1933 skreiv Rosemary Carr Benét og Stephen Vincent Benét om Appleseed i barnediktboka A Book of Americans.[7][5]
I Disney-filmen Melody Time frå 1948 opptrer Appleseed i eit animert musikalsk segment med tittelen The Legend of Johnny Appleseed.[5]
