«Joy to the World» er ein populær julesong i den engelskspråklege verda.[1] Teksten er skriven av den engelske salmeforfattaren Isaac Watts, basert på Salme 98 i Bibelen. Songen vart først publisert i 1719 i samlinga til Watts: The Psalms of David: Imitated in the language of the New Testament, and applied to the Christian state and worship.

Seint på 1900-talet var «Joy to the World» den mest publiserte julesongen i Nord-Amerika.[1]

Kjende innspelingar[endre | endre wikiteksten]

I 1965 spelte The Supremes inn songen for albumet sitt Merry Christmas.

Mariah Carey spelte inn songen i 1994 for albumet Merry Christmas. Carey-versjonen, gjort som ein dansepop-song, kombinerte refrenget (med noko anna tekst) med Hoyt Axton-songen «Joy to the World» (gjort populær av Three Dog Night). Charlotte Church spelte inn ein versjon av denne songen i 2000 for julealbumet Dream a Dream. The Jonas Brothers spelte inn ein versjon av denne songen kalla «Joyful Kings» i 2008 for Disney Channel-julealbumet All Wrapped Up.

Whitney Houston spelte inn songen for The Preacher's Wife: Original Soundtrack Album (1996), og denne var òg med på One Wish: The Holiday Album (2003). I 2002 spelte Patty Loveless & Jon Randall ein duett av songen for Patty-albumet Bluegrass & White Snow: A Mountain Christmas. Clay Aiken spelte inn songen i 2004 for albumet Merry Christmas with Love.

Tekst[endre | endre wikiteksten]

Vers 1

Joy to the world! the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

Vers 2

Joy to the world! the Saviour reigns;
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

Vers 3 (valfritt)

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.

Vers 4

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.
