«The Ballad of Billy the Kid» er ein song av Billy Joel frå albumet Piano Man i 1973. Han vart òg gjeven ut som singel i Storbritannia med «If I Only Had The Words (To Tell You)» som B-side.[1]
Songen er ein oppdikta versjon av soga om Billy the Kid. I eit intervju i 1974 sa Joel «Songen er hovudsakleg eit eksperiment med ein impresjonistisk tekst. Han er historisk sett fullstendig unøyaktig».[2]

I det siste verset i songen byter teksten frå Billy the Kid til ein «Billy» frå Oyster Bay på Long Island.[3] Forfattaren Ken Bielen har tolka denne «Billy» i siste verset som Billy Joel sjølv, som kom frå Oyster Bay.[3] Joel hevda sjølv at «Billy» i dette verset ikkje var han sjølv, men ein bartender som arbeidde i Oyster Bay, kalla Billy Nastri.[4]
Konsertversjonar[endre | endre wikiteksten]
I 1981 gav Joel ut eit konsertopptak av songen på Songs in the Attic.[4] Konsertopptaket vart nytta som B-sida til ein live singel med «She's Got a Way».[5] Eit anna konsertopptak vart gjeven ut på Live at Shea Stadium: The Concert i 2011.[6]
