The King of the Gospel Singers er det sjette studioalbumet frå Little Richard, utanom samlealbum. Det er eit gospelalbum med innspelingar han gjorde for Mercury Records, og vert generelt rekna som ei betre innspeling enn dei to førre gospelalbuma hans for Goldner.[1]

Spora på albumet vart spelte inn i New York City kring juni 1961. Produsenten på innspelinga Quincy Jones fortalte: Eg hadde gleda av å spele inn «Joy Joy Joy» og «He's Not Just A Soldier» Little Richard for albuma hans. Det var ei sann glede å arbeide med Little Richard i New York. Sjølv om han framleis var særs religiøs, merka eg at han ikkje hadde mista kjensla for rock 'n' soul. [2]

Tolv gospelsongar til vart spelte inn for Mercury ein ukjend stad i mars 1962. Av desse songane vart berre to gjevne ut på den tida, då «Change Your Ways»/«He Got What He Wanted» kom ut på singel i april 1962. Dei andre songane kom berre på piratkopiplater eller på arkivplater i 1980-åra.

Etter denne perioden fortsette Richard å spele gospel, og spelte inn elleve spor for Atlantic Records mellom juni 1962 og april 1963, før han vart lokka attende til rock 'n' roll under ein turné i England og spelte inn fem songar for Specialty Records mellom april 1963 og april 1964.

The King of the Gospel Singers inspirerte indirekte til at Richard gjekk attende til rock and roll, då han turnerte saman med The Beatles og vart inspirert av den gamle stilen sin. become inspired by his old sound. Richard himself observed of the album that it was the thing that really put me back in business. It was just the kind of music I had always wanted to record. After it was released the offers for gospel concerts started pouring in. [1]
