Azoikum
Azoikum er eit eldre namn på det geologiske supereonet prekambrium.[1] Azoikum kjem frå greske a- («utan») og zoön («dyr» eller «levande vesen») og tyder altså «utan liv». Ein nytta dette namnet fordi ein trudde det ikkje fanst i liv på den tida.[2][3]
Nemninga blei nytta så tidleg som i 1846 av geologen Adams,[4] og erstatta etterkvart det tidlegare omgrepet «primitiv».[4] På grunn av kontroversen knytt til evolusjon var omgrepet «azoikum» for det meste blitt erstatta kring 1900 med «arkeikum» eller «arkeozoikum».[5]
