Glasgow Police Pipe Band er eit sekkepipekorps av fyrste klasse frå Glasgow i Skottland. Det blei grunnlagt i 1883 som Burgh of Govan Police Pipe Band, og hadde den største suksessen sin i tevlingar som Strathclyde Police Pipe Band.

Burgh of Govan Police Pipe Band

Korpset var eit av dei fyrste sivile sekkepipekorpsa i Storbritannia då det blei danne i 1883 som Burgh of Govan Police Pipe Band.[1] Den fyrste i rolla som pipe major var William Bremer, som blei etterfølgd av Walter Drysdale i 1890, og som i sin tur blei etterfølgd av Alexander Hutcheon i 1898.[1] Korpset hadde godt omdøme, og blei anerkjent nasjonalt for kvaliteten sin.[2][3] Det hadde ein tartan som var utforma av politisjefen, og spelte to årlege konsertar for å samla inn pengar.[3]

Govan og Partick blei del av Glasgow i 1912, og korpset blei til City of Glasgow Police Pipe Band.[4] I 1913 blei Hutcheon erstatta av William Gray, ein gullmedaljevinnar, og tartan blei òg erstatta av Royal Stewart.[1] Korpset vann sitt fyrste VM i 1920, men på grunn av på andre arrangement enn denne konkurransen, vann bandet sitt neste VM fyrst i 1936.[1]

Gray blei etterfølgd av John MacDonald i 1932. Han hadde studert med Gray i mange år, og hadde òg vunne gullmedaljar. Han vann både på Argyllshire Gathering og Northern Meeting i løpet av ei veke.[1] Under MacDonald vann bandet VM i 1936, 1937, 1938 og 1939, og etter andre verdskrigen i 1946, 1949 og 1951.[1]

I 1975 blei Strathclyde Police danna ved ei samanslåing av fleire politistyrkar, og blei den nest største politistyrken i Storbritannia. Sekkepipekorpsa til dei ulike styrkane blei samla i Strathcleyde Police Pipe Band under leiing av Ian MacLellan.[5]

Under MacLellan og trommeslagerleiaren Alex Connell vann bandet VM i 1976 og 1979, og blei plassert på andre plass etter Dysart and Dundonald i 1977 og 1978.[5] Strathclyde Police vann så kvart år frå 1981 til 1986, og deretter fire gonger i rekkje frå 1988 til 1991.[5][6] I 1987 blei 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band frå Canada det fyrste bandet frå utanfor Skottland til å vinna tittelen, og Simon Fraser Universitety, som òg var frå Canada, kom på andre plass, slik at Strathclyde Police enda opp på tredje plass.[7][8] Dei seks vinnartitlane på rad er blitt ståande som ein rekord, og det same gjer dei tjue totale titlane korpset har samla gjennom historia.[1]

I 2009 truga økonomiske kutt og ei avgrensing i talet på arrangement korpset kunne spille på framtida til Strathclyde Police Pipe Band.[9][10][11][12] Bradford og pipe-sergent Duncan Nicholson trekte seg i protest, men kom tilbake i januar 2010 etter at ein hadde fått på plass ein ny finansieringsavtale.[13]

I 2013 blei territorialpolitiet i Skottland samla i Police Scotland, og namnet til korpset blei endra til Greater Glasgow Police Scotland Pipe Band.[14][15] I 2016 blei namnet på korpset endra att til Glasgow Police Pipe Band.[16][17] I 2021 fekk Police Scotland eit felles sekkepipekorps under namnet Police Scotland & Federation Pipe Band.[18]
