Text Appearing Before Image:
aded our way through this mazeof huts we found ourselves in a widegully or dry river bed, with jagged rockstowering up on either side. There was anattempt at a path along one side of theslope, and little boys, bedecked in their holi-day garb, were careering along on donkeys, which they hired outside the village. Mensquatted on the ground with little trays, onwhich were placed sweetmeats and aerateddrinks of different tempting colours, andaround these insidious salesmen were as-sembled groups of little children and women, some extremely pretty. The natives of Muscat are rather a mixedlot; many are negroes, and half-castes betweenthem and the Arabs, also Hindoos. Thewomen, and even the little girls over nineor ten, have small masks or black bands ofsome material, very often decorated withsilver ornaments, drawn across the nose andcheeks, leaving the eyes and mouth free;thus the face is not hidden entirely fromview like the Arab women in Egypt. Onehas to go at least fifteen or twenty miles
Text Appearing After Image:

We left Muscat in the evening, and our nextstopping place was Jask, on the Persiancoast. Here there is a telegraph station, situated on a spit of land which runs far out tosea, forming one side of a bay, which is inclosedon the other side by high hills of rock, rising uprange above range in the distance till lost tosight in a faded grey outline against the clearblue sky. We stopped for cargo at Bunder Abbas, and again at Lingah, but at neither place werewe allowed to land, as the quarantine lawexisting there requires ten clear days to havepassed since one has left an infected portbefore one can be allowed to go free. In ourcase we had not done the prescribed period, having been away from Bombay only abouta week. Our next place of call was Bahirin, an isl
