Joe Temperley (20. september 1929–11. mai 2016)[1] var ein skotsk jazzmusikar. Han spelte ulike instrument, men var mest knytt til baritonsaksofon, sopransaksofon og bassklarinett.

Temperley var fødd i Cowdenbeath i Skottland, og voks opp i Lochgelly.[2] Far hans var bussjåfør.[3]
Temperley spelte fyrst kornett, då han var 12,[2] og byrja deretter å spela saksofon i då han var 14.[4] Seks månader seinare fekk han sin fyrste jobb i Tommy Sampson's Orchestra i Glasgow, etter å ha spelt i lokale danseband.[4] Han blei med i Humphrey Lyttelton sitt London-baserte band i 1957 og var der til 1965, då han flytta til USA.[3] Etter seks månader blei han rekruttert av Woody Herman, som han turnerte saman med i to år.[3]
Han opptredde eller spelte i lag med Buddy Rich, Joe Henderson, Duke Pearson, Jazz Composer's Orchestra, The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra og Clark Terry, blant mange andre. I oktober 1974 turnerte han og spelte inn med Duke Ellington Orchestra som erstatning for Harry Carney.[4]
På 1980-talet spelte Temperley i Broadway-showet Sophisticated Ladies. Han spelte i filmar som Cotton Club, Biloxi Blues, Brighton Beach Memoirs, When Harry Met Sally... og Tune in Tomorrow, sistnemnde med musikk komponert av Wynton Marsalis.
Han var gjestementor for Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra-programmet i Skottland.[5] Han var ein av dei fyrste medlemmene av Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, og var på fakultetet ved Juilliard School for Jazz Studies.[6]
Temperley døydde av nyresvikt og kreft i New York by den 11. mai 2016, 86 år gamal.[7][1]
