Han skreiv over 3000 songar, ein tredjedel av dei gospelsongar, mellom anna «Take My Hand, Precious Lord» og «Peace in the Valley».

Forfattaren Anthony Heilbut sa om påverknaden til Dorseyat han "combined the good news of gospel with the bad news of blues".
