Bylbylar, Pycnonotidae, er ein biologisk familie av små til mellomstore fuglar innanfor inndelinga songfuglar av sporvefuglar. Familien er fordelt over det meste av Afrika og inn i Midtausten, gjennom tropisk Asia til Indonesia, og så langt nord som Japan. Nokre få isolerte artar lever på dei tropiske øyane i Indiahavet. Det finst om lag 140 artar i 23 slekter. Medan nokre artar finst i dei fleste habitat, er afrikanske artar hovudsakleg funne i regnskogen. Derimot er regnskogsartar sjeldne i Asia, i staden føretrekkjer dei meir opne område der.

Skildring

Bylbylar er slanke sporvefuglar med kort hals. Stjerten er lang og vengene korte og avrunda. Hos mest alle artar er nebbet langstrakt og litt nedbøygd i enden. Dei varierer i lengd frå 13 cm for knøttbylbyl til 29 cm for stråbylbyl. Generelt er kjønna like, sjølv om hofuglar har ein tendens til å vere litt mindre ein hannfuglar. Hos nokre få artar er skilnadene så store at dei feilaktig har vore skildra som funksjonelt ulike artar. Den mjuke fjørdrakta hos nokre artar er fargerik med område i gult, raudt eller oransje i kinn, hals eller panne, men dei fleste er lite iaugefallande, med einsarta olivenbrun til svart fjørdrakt. Artar med kjedeleg farga auga har ofte augeringar i kraftig kontrastfarge. Nokre artar har mykje tydelege fjørtoppar. Bylbylar er særs vokale, songen for dei fleste artane blir skildra som nasal eller grusleg. Ein forfattar har skildra songen frå brunøyrebylbyl som «dei mest skjemmande lydar laga av nokon fugl».

Bylbylar et frå eit breitt spekter av ulike matkjelder, frå frukt til frø, nektar, små insekt og andre leddyr, og sjølv små virveldyr. Dei fleste artane er fruktetarar og supplere kosten med nokre insekt, medan det er ein betydeleg minoritet av spesialistar, særleg i Afrika. Ope land artar er spesielt generalistar. Bylbylar i slekta Criniger så vel som børstebylbylar i slekta Bleda utfører matauke i fleirartsflokkar.

Bylbylar er generelt monogame. Eit uvanleg unntak er mustasjebylbyl som det minste i delar av utbreiingsområde synast å vere polygame og engasjerer seg i eit paringsleiksystem. Nokre artar har òg ordningar med «fosterforeldre», der dei som ikkje hekkar, vanlegvis unge fuglar frå tidlegare kull, bidrar til å syte for oppveksande ungar frå eit dominerande hekkande par. Hoa legg og rugar opptil fem lillarosa egg, reiret blir bygd i eit tre. Ruginga varar vanlegvis mellom 11 og 14 dagar, og ungane er flygedyktige etter 12-16 dagar.

Tilhøvet til menneske

Raudøyrebylbyl og raudgumpbylbyl blir fanga i store mengder for sal som burfuglar. Dei har òg vorte mykje introduserte til tropiske og subtropiske område, til dømes sørlege Florida, Fiji, Australia og Hawaii. Nokre artar reknast som skadedyr for avlingar, særleg i frukthagar.

Generelt er bylbylar er resistente mot menneskeleg påverknad på miljøet og er tolerant overfor forstyrra habitat. Rundt 13 artar er vurdert som trua av menneskeleg aktivitet, dette er hovudsakleg spesialiserte skogsartar som taper habitat.

Etymologi og kultur

Ordet 'bylbyl' kjem gjennom tysk frå klassisk arabisk og persisk بلبل bulbul. Det er eit lydhermande ord som viser til songen til fuglen.

Bylbylen er ein viktig fugl i arabisk og persisk dikting, og eit mykje brukt symbol innan sufismen. I omsetjingar til europeiske språk blir han gjerne erstatta med nattergal. I fleire asiatiske tradisjonar bruker ein til dømes «bulbul» som metafor om ein dyktig songar, slik ein i Vesten gjerne har brukt «nattergal».
