Bobbye Jean Hall Porter (fødd 1950) er ein USA-amerikansk perkusjonist som har spelt med mange rock-, soul-, blues- og jazzartistar. Ho har medverka på 22 songar som har nådd topp 10 på Billboard Hot 100, seks av dei nådde toppen av lista.
Tidleg karriere
[endre | endre wikiteksten]Bobbye Jean Hall vart fødd i Detroit, og byrja karrieren sin der med å spele perkusjon på nattklubbar medan ho framleis var i tenåra. Ved hjelp av bongo- og congatrommer, og anna perkusjon, spelte ho på mange Motown-innspelingar.[1] Ho budde i Europa nokre år før ho flytta til Los Angeles[2] der ho var ein av få kvinnelege studiomusikarar i eit mannsdominert yrke, og spelte stundom med The Funk Brothers.[3] Ho var alt erfaren i mai 1971, då ho spele bongotrommer på Marvin Gaye sin «Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)».[4] Første gongen ho spelte i studio bakt eit fullt rocketrommesett, var med Chris Ethridge på abumet L.A. Getaway.[5]
Hall spelte inn fleire album med Bill Withers, mellom anna på den store hitten hans «Lean On Me», og eit konsertalbum frå Carnegie Hall. Ho turnerte med Carole King i mai-juni 1973, og spelte på to studioalbum av King.[6] I mai 1974 spelte ho igjen i Carnegie Hall, denne gongen med James Taylor, etter å ha spelt på to av albuma hans. Hall spelte for Stevie Wonder på eit par songar i 1974 og 1976, inkludert «Bird of Beauty» der quicaen hennar er med på å skape brasiliansk karnevalstemning.[7]
I 1973–1974 byrja Hall stundom å kalle seg Bobbye Hall Porter eller Bobbye Porter Hall, då ho gifta seg med plateprodusenten Joe Porter.[8][9][10] Hall gav ut eit album på eiga hand i mars 1977: Body Language For Lovers, eit soul-jazz-instrumentalverk med melodiar skriven av ho sjølv og ektemannen.
Globalt kjend
[endre | endre wikiteksten]I 1978 tok Bob Dylan ho med på verdsturneen sin, frå midten av februar til midten av desember, og betalte ho kring 2 500 dollar i veka (eller kring 9 000 dollar i dagens pengar).[11] Denne høge summen kom av at ho gjekk glipp av studioinnspelingar medna ho var på turné.[11] Konsertopptak frå denne turneen kom ut på Bob Dylan at Budokan, og undervegs i turneen spelte Dylan og det meste av turnebandet, inkludert Hall på perkusjon, inn studioalbumet Street-Legal.[12]
Seint i august 1978 spelte Hall congatrommer på Tom Waits-albumet Blue Valentine på songen «Romeo Is Bleeding», og gav denne ei latinsk kjensle.[13]
I 1979 spelte ho på The Wall med Pink Floyd. Ho spelte med Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band tidleg i 1980-åra. Hall spelte for Stevie Nicks på albumet Bella Donna og turnerte med ho i 1982 og 1986.[14] I filmen Little Shop of Horrors i 1986, spelte Hall tamburin og congatrommer på filmmusikken.[15]
