«There is a Mountain» er ein song og singel av Donovan, som kom ut i 1967.[1] Han nådde 8. plassen på singellista i Storbritannia,[2] 9. plassen på amerikanske Cashbox si Topp 100-liste[3] og 11. plassen på Billboard si Hot 100-liste.[4]
Med seg på singelen har Donovan (vokal og akustisk gitar), Tony Carr på perkusjon, Harold McNair på fløyte og arrangement og Danny Thompson på bass.
The Allman Brothers Band sin «Mountain Jam» (frå Eat a Peach, 1972) er ein lang, improvisert jam basert på denne songen. Dei vart inspirert etter å ha høyrt Grateful Dead gjere det same. Ein kan høyre eit par taktar frå «There is a Mountain» i songen deira «Alligator» frå albumetAnthem of the Sun frå 1968.
Teksten referer til eit buddhistisk ordtak frå Qingyuan Weixin. Det blei omsett av D.T. Suzuki i hans Essays in Zen Buddhism, ei av dei første bøkene som populariserte buddhisme i Europa og USA.[5]
Before a man studies Zen, to him mountains are mountains and waters are waters; after he gets an insight into the truth of Zen through the instruction of a good master, mountains to him are not mountains and waters are not waters; but after this when he really attains to the abode of rest, mountains are once more mountains and waters are waters.[6]
